As could be expected, Villeneuve isn't aiming at grand gestures, but rather keeps it subtle and even somewhat dreamy. Which is a good thing, because in someone else's hands, this film about two scientists finding ways to communicate with alien visitors, could have ended up as a poor 'Independence Day' rip-off.
